March 7, 2025The CapTech Difference: “That’s Where I Thrive”
Think back to when you started your current job. Could you have guessed you’d be where you are today?
CapTech data and analytics fellow, Nathan Tatum, didn’t.
“When I joined CapTech 15 years ago, I had no idea I’d be here this long,” he says. “This is a special place,” he continues. “People know you as an individual. We look out for each other. You don’t get that at other places.”
Gabriella Baum, also a CapTech data and analytics fellow, agrees. “This was my first job out of college, and it turned out to be a community where I can feel supported and build my own career path. I constantly feel like I’m growing and learning and being challenged. That’s where I thrive.”
That’s not the case in every company, of course. The data and analytics industry is known for having a relatively high job turnover rate. And there are plenty of legitimate reasons. Some changes are prompted by “traditional” motivations like career advancement, compensation, and work-life balance. But in the data and analytics field, we increasingly meet with job candidates who feel constrained in their current situations.
Many are actively seeking opportunities to diversify their skillsets. They’re eager to work with technologies at the forefront of the field — like AWS, Azure, and GCP, or data warehouse solutions like Databricks and Snowflake — to create or improve clients’ data architecture, pipelines, and analytics capabilities.
“CapTech clients tend to have already done a lot of thinking,” Tim Chase, CapTech data and analytics director, points out. “That gives us a chance to adopt a lot of technologies. And we support that with CoPs (communities of practice) to help our practitioners stay up-to-date.”
At the same time, many job candidates are craving corporate cultures and aspirations that align with their own.
“What keeps me at CapTech is that I can learn so much here,” says CapTech data and analytics director, Macharia Lamar. “Coming in as an experienced hire lets you break the cycle of doing mundane things. You get to do multiple things. That’s the beauty of being here. You find what you’re interested in and enable clients to be transformative.”
